Marina Rey asked me to provide alternatives for people who did not like flowers on Valentine’s Day. So instead of another date idea I will provide you will a few examples of alternatives to give instead of the traditional flowers that sell in large bulk on this holiday.
1. Origami flowers. Origami Instructions has tons of different designs. By making it yourself not only are you saving money but you are showing your valentine that you think they are worth the special effort.
2. Chocolate roses. These are available at many stores for Valentine’s Day and most people can not resist chocolate.
3. Does your valentine have a favorite romantic comedy? Surprise them by showing up at their door with something that reminds them of their favorite timeless romance. (Example: A bouquet of sharpened pencils from You’ve Got Mail.)
4. A dried flower bouquet. This may take longer to locate but it would be a special reminder of you that will never fade away.
5. Write a love poem. Not only are you being creative but you are giving the one you love something that comes directly from your heart.
6. Make a CD mix of love songs. Or an playlist for their MP3 player. A bonus if you can load it onto their player for Valentine’s Day (or put it in their car so it starts playing when they turn it on) without them knowing it. Make sure to leave a note on the player or wheel to let them know someone was thinking of them!
I hope these alternative ideas to flowers spark your creativity and desire to make something special for the special one in your life.
Do you have any great ideas for altern-flowers? Leave them in the comments! I’ll post the best ones in a blog later this week.
for valentine’s day when we were first dating jordan drew a bunch of different orchids, cut them out, and tied them into a bouquet. i still have them somewhere. moral of the story? if you have a talent, use it!
more things off the top of my head:
– buy potted flowers you can plant together in the spring.
– make button flowers! [you can also buy them here: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=15422925%5D
– donate to a charity in your names. one of my favourites is heifer international, where you can donate animals to help feed and sustain families in impoverished and developing countries – a flock of chicks will only set you back $20!
– give her floral-scented bath bombs or lotions – just make sure she’s not allergic to lavender like i am ;]
Oooh, now the chocolate flowers, THOSE are something I wouldn’t have to worry about. I may be one of the rare girly-girls who doesn’t like flowers, but I make up for it with a love of chocolate! Great idea! Also loving Ariel’s floral scented bath bombs/lotions. I love all other things fragrance. Great post!
Here’s a couple more ideas:
-if your special someone is into gardening, buy him/her a window garden (vegetables or herbs are the best because they have double the use!)
-if they are into nature and “being green” plant a tree in their name
-gift baskets are always a special gift, especially if you make them yourself. know someone who loves to write? make them a gift basket with writing utensils (pens, pencils, markers, etc), stationary paper (an extra plus if you find some with their name/initial on it), journal, dictionary/thesaurus (rhyming, english, or foreign language), etc.; just remember to make it unique to their hobbies/talents
these are just a few ideas, but there are plenty more if you just think about what your special someone is into and what they’re good at!! good luck on your valentine’s day!
